Questions for providers for L.G.B.T.Q+ audiences

Hope For The Day® wants to empower you to start a honest conversation with your potential therapist to find the right fit for you as an individual! Here are some questions to consider asking during your screening call and/or the first therapy session. Choose the ones that feel right for you!


  • How much experience/training do you have in working with the L.G.B.T.Q+ population?

  • Do you believe that gender identity and sex assigned at birth can be different?

  • Have you ever worked with [insert your identity] before?

  • How would you describe your experience using gender-neutral pronouns?

  • How do you view L.G.B.T.Q+ individuals and their relationships?

  • How are heterosexual relationships different than L.G.B.T.Q+ relationships?

  • How does your sexuality and personal background impact your work as a therapist?

  • If you don’t know something about a topic, where do you go to learn more?

  • What is your comfort level when it comes to talking about topics such as:

    • privilege

    • discrimination

    • intersectionality  

    • microaggressions

    • systemic oppression

  • How would you describe your knowledge of safety risks and considerations related to my [insert your identity] identity?

  • How would you describe your knowledge of stereotypes and/or common misconceptions of my [insert your identity] identity?

  • What does it mean to you to provide culturally competent care? Describe training you’ve had on this topic.
