Self Care Through Color Therapy

When was the last time you colored something? Was it in grade school? Was it recently when you played with a child? Or maybe you’re more into digital art? No matter your vibe or age, it’s no secret that coloring can be a stress reliever for many people.

Beyond personal coloring, color therapy has become quite popular in recent years. Color therapy stems from the science that different colors carry and hold different meanings. Have you ever noticed that yellow makes you feel rejuvenated and energized, while red makes you feel more relaxed?

While it isn’t an exact science, there have been hundreds of studies completed linking colors to different reactions, responses and feelings.

Color Therapy doesn’t have to be just about changing the light bulb in your night lamp or relating each of your emotions to a specific color. Let’s talk about some fun ways that you can enjoy the benefits of color in your life:

  1. EAT the rainbow!

Consider enjoying a meal or snack that features as many colors as possible. This can look like a salad with a bunch of different toppings, an assortment of fruit, or maybe even just a pack of Skittles.

  1. PLAY with the rainbow!

Did you know that there isn’t an age limit to playing with legos and blocks? In fact, there isn’t an age limit to playing at all. Consider building something with your hands. Whether it’s following a template for a lego structure, building a block fort, or even putting together a puzzle, spend some time engaging in intentional play and take notice of all the colors you encounter.

  1. FEEL the rainbow!

Scavenger hunts were such an underrated part of childhood. Do you remember the feeling when you discovered a cool rock or stick? Plan some time to go for a walk and make it fun by doing a scavenger hunt during the time. You may even discover some new plants along the way!

BONUS: COLOR the rainbow! If you answered the beginning of this blog by saying that you hadn’t colored in a while, here’s your chance! Here’s a brand new coloring sheet for you to enjoy!

Take some time to center yourself, unwind from what’s happening, and just color. Once you’re finished, hang it up somewhere you can regularly view your artwork and the reminder that “IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK.”
